I often go to sleep with something on the computer (the one I use as a radio/television. I did so last night, with it tuned to Sky News. Why do I mention this? Because I was rudely awakened in the middle of the night, as the Catalan election did/didn’t get underway in Spain. I was awakened by gunfire.

That gunfire was directed by the Guardia Civil on citizens of Catalonia (the area around Barcelona) who wanted to vote on what Spain says is an illegal referendum on secession from Spain. I have no idea who is right or wrong here. I can see both sides sympathetically. The right of self-determination opposed to the right of Spain to rule its territory.
